Shutdown Hero

Where federal funding stands.

We check Congress.gov every night for progress on the bills that fund federal agencies, and show how much time is left before current funding runs out.

Where things stand

Federal funding runs through December 11, 2026.

42days left

If no new funding becomes law first, a lapse would begin at 12:01 a.m. Eastern on Saturday, December 12, 2026.

Deadline risk: Moderate

  • The House has passed full-year bills for Agriculture and FDA, Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, and National Security and State. The Senate hasn’t passed them yet.
  • For the other 9 bills, nothing on our watch list that would extend funding past December 11, 2026 has passed either chamber yet.

Based only on how far funding bills have moved and how much time is left. It isn’t a forecast. How we rate risk

Last checked from Congress.gov.

Each bill funds different agencies.

All 12 regular appropriations bills are funded through December 11, 2026 by the same law, Public Law 119-103, signed September 2, 2026. Funding can lapse for some agencies and not others.

How we rate the deadline risk.

The rating looks at two things: how far the most advanced bill that would fund each group of agencies has moved through Congress, and how many days are left. When groups of agencies are at different stages, the one furthest behind sets the rating.

It isn’t a forecast. It doesn’t weigh news, negotiations, or politics, and a low rating doesn’t mean a shutdown can’t happen. We hide the rating when our last check of Congress.gov is more than 48 hours old, and we don’t report a lapse until a check after the deadline confirms it.

What to do with this.

Your agency decides your work status during a lapse. Follow its official notices, and use OPM’s furlough guidance for the terms you’ll see in them.
